As we drew closer to the end of 2010, it is also time to sum up what happened in the year and plan for the coming year.

If we go by the local newscasters daily reports, then we can look forward to positive economic growth in 2011. It will be slow but the overall outlook is trending upwards.

As of the latest statistics report (November 2010), the overall visitors arrival to date has increased by 8% and that data was taken from January to September 2010. So we can safely presume that the final data will reinforce positive growth.

However, for the wedding industry, the overall result was not positive. It is not clear what is causing the decline. Could it be that marriage is no longer the fundamental foundation for the 'family' hierarchical value in this highly technologically savvy environment? Or perhaps it is just a matter of changing priorities? For whatever reason, it is clear that getting married in the islands is sloping downwards.

If we disregard the above reasons for the marriage downward trend and put it down to a fluke due to economic variables, then we can look for ways to freshen our Hawaii wedding industry. It is a known fact that we live on an island and that our economy is heavily dependent on the visitors industry. The Hawaii wedding industry included. There is an ongoing highly sophisticated marketing campaign targeting Hawaii as a premier wedding destination. Television and magazine ads abound. In the meantime, one way to boost business is to find innovative ways to market locally.

So where does one start marketing within the neighborhood? Share your apps with your gym friends, your family, grocer, mailman/woman, with everyone that you know. Build a landing page that covers your services. Social media is another way to reach people within your community or target area. Use free advertising, like craiglist, to spread the word. If you have the fund, advertise in your local paper.

Businesses that depended heavily on the visitors industry sometimes neglect the local market in their advertising campaign. I know because I was one. But looking closer to home will not only add value to the bottom line but will also help boost the local economy. A win win situation for all.

New Laws: Hawaii Beach Weddings

A lot of destination wedding couples like the idea of having their wedding on a nice beach with the ocean in the background. And in Hawaii, a golden sunset shimmering on the ocean is indeed sublime. However, even though all beaches are public in Hawaii, the new laws has changed the old ways of doing things. For the individual beachgoer, nothing changes. For commercial enterprises, the new changes mean more outgoing expenses and a very time-consuming proposition indeed.

First, all beach weddings must have a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). Cost starts at $20.00 and up and depends on the number of people and square footage usage. This is pretty straight forward.

Another relevant requirement: No chairs allowed on the sand, unless a person is physically handicapped or elderly. This ruling is up for interpretation. Granted a person in a wheelchair will need a chair, but what happens when a member of the wedding party is young, does not have a medical certificate stating that they are at risk if they stand too long and who goes ahead and gets seated? This should not be a serious matter but it is. Violators could be fined a hefty $500.00 or more!

These new laws impacts both clients and wedding providers. The time that is takes wedding providers to get the necessary permits will affect their costs. The wedding couple who envision an idyllic beach setting with chairs etc., will need to find other alternatives. There are many more changes. The link from DLNR explains it all.

Why am I writing about 'mother of the bride dresses' when the majority of our wedding couples are just visiting the islands? Because there is a demand for 'mother of the bride dresses.' And on the World Wide Web we can be of service even from Hawaii.

Planning a wedding can be quite stressful. And oftentimes, the mother of the bride or groom neglects to think of their own formal outfit until the very end. There is no need to panic though. With all the varieties of colors and styles available online and in brick and mortar establishments, every one can find their style.

2008 Prospects, Opportunities and Customer Satisfaction

We have been amiss in keeping our newsletter updated and current. There are no excuses, just explanations.

Towards the end of 2007, Hawaiian Waikiki Wedding went through many new and exciting changes. For many years, a high percentage of our business contracts were with established companies that outsourced their wedding needs and through previous clients' referrals. That worked well but we were constantly seeking methods to improve and expand our business. Entered the World Wide Web! It was time to change.

Do we really believe that this way of reaching out and interacting with customers will help our business? There is no doubt about it. After doing our own test and research, we learned that the internet has greatly improved our Customer Satisfaction, reach a wider customer base, and saves time.

The opportunities presented with doing business on the web are phenomenal. There are advantages and disadvantages but overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. The important thing is to remember that there is no perfect way, just a better way of doing business.

So how do we rate the World Wide Web? We believe that the Web is by far the best and economical way to reach new Prospects and test new Opportunities before spending valuable time and money. Waste time and money and most business will flounder and die. So this year we are putting in a lot of effort to learn and innovate using the internet.

Do we think that the customer will benefit? A big YES! Customers value their time and money just as much as us. Now that you have decided to tie the knot in Hawaii, the planning stage begins. No one wants this process to be a stressful one, so getting organized is a must. Resources abound on the World Wide Web. But before you start your search, relax, close your eyes for a moment, visualize your perfect setting, and now that you have an idea of what you really want, you are ready to begin.

Start making a list of things you want done; additional questions you want answered. For example, how long does it take to get the marriage license? Should it be a church, garden, sunset sail, or beach wedding? How many guests are expected? Is the theme going to be formal or casual?

For the local Hawaiian couple, it is easy to coordinate all the above. For the visitors planning on getting married in the Islands, a wedding planner may be the best way to go, but with a little research and determination, the wedding couple can plan and organize everything before they arrive on the Island.

Getting the marriage license

This is the official Web site for obtaining information on getting married in Hawaii. The whole process takes approximately 45 minutes.

Find a Marriage Officiate

Surf the Web or ask your hotel's customer service department for referrals. The majority of hotels have their in-house wedding department, or they work with an independent wedding company. If it's a referral, go on and search the Web. The Officiate just might have a personal Web site.

Choosing the Wedding Venue

Many locations can be viewed on the Web. Beach weddings are popular. All beach locations are free to the public. In Honolulu, the oceanfront Leahi Park on the slopes of Diamond Head is our favorite public location. Situated behind a high iron fence, Leahi Beach Park is like having a private location. Note that there is no site fee for all public locations, and alcoholic beverage is prohibited. All the islands have quaint chapels ideal for small wedding parties. Some hotels have their own private wedding chapels.

If you want to add photography, a sunset wedding is recommended; the reddish glow adds magic to your pictures. Most photographers do have samples of their work on the Web. If you have chosen your Marriage Official, ask for referrals.

Planning your dream Hawaii wedding should be fun, not stressful. So start writing down what you want, make a list of your questions, and target your search. The generally accepted bias is 'Wedding is Expensive.' It will be more than that. Add stress to the mix, and if you believe that thinking and go with the flow, you will surely spend a lot of money. You don't want to do that. Marry smart. Stop, Plan, and Save.

Another bias is a Destination Wedding is not affordable for the average couple. Dispel the myth! Most Americans who can afford a vacation can have a dream destination wedding.

Marry smart is not only a good start but a responsible beginning for all wedding couples. Smart planning is essential. If you don't plan, your wedding will put you into debt before you even say "I do."

So where do you want to get married? You can get married right where you live, or in Hawaii! Yes, Hawaii is within your budget. With a little planning, you can have your wedding anywhere you choose. A Hawaiian wedding in beautiful Waikiki is not impossible.

The National Association of Wedding Ministers wedding statistics claim that the average amount spend on a traditional American wedding is $22,000. Hawaii is the second most popular destination wedding location. Getting Married in Hawaii: The Hawaii Wedding Statistics

Hawaii is a top wedding destination and approximately 50% of all weddings are performed in Honolulu. Even though the population growth is on the downtrend, the wedding business has grown 68% within the last ten years.

The above 2006 graph shows that of all weddings performed statewide, 45% were in Honolulu. Of that number, close to half (47%) were Non-Residents weddings. The statistics support the growing numbers of visitors choosing to get married in the island.

The statistics are not in yet, but July 7th, 2007, was a busy wedding day. Statistically, June has been the busiest wedding month. It's possible that July might change that statistic in 2007. My Wedding Official had three weddings to officiate on that day.

If the visitors business continue to grow, Hawaii's wedding business will thrive. Currently, the trend has flattened out, but the overall sentiment is an upside curve.

Getting Married in Hawaii: The Apostille Request

Who needs an Apostille, and what is it exactly?

Most European countries need the Apostille when they get married overseas. For countries that jointed the 1961 Hague Convention, "the authentication process requires just one official form called an Apostille to accompany the birth, death, marriage, or divorce certificate. In the State of Hawaii, Apostilles are prepared by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
For nations who have not joined the Convention, the authentication process requires two separate forms to accompany the certificate. In Hawaii, one of these forms is called a Certification and is prepared by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. The third form is called an Authentication and is prepared by the State Circuit Court" http://www.hawaii.gov/health/vital-records/vital-records/apostille.html

Approximately 90% of our clients are Europeans. And most will leave the islands soon after their wedding ceremony. In that case, we offer to submit the couple's Apostille request for them. Last year the process was quite simple. We took the one page "Request For Certified Copy of Marriage Record" pay the $10.00 fee and the $1.00 Apostille fee. The licensing office mails off the documents to the clients.

Now there are new rules. We can't just drop off the requests as before. Now clients must make a photocopy of their picture ID (passports etc.), write a note authorizing HWW to submit their requests, sign and date the form. The person submitting the form will also need a picture ID.

We asked why these new rules? And the answer was 'for our national security.'

Getting Married in Hawaii: Beach Wedding Locations

In real estate, 'location, location, location' is synonymous with high prices and a preferred piece of property. In Hawaii, this location bias is very much alive. Preferred locations demand top dollars; however, prime wedding locations, like Hawaii's beaches, do not charge a fee.

All of Hawaii's beautiful beaches are free to the public. There are 'limitations of use;' for example, no alcohol is allowed, permits are required for some locations, and the number of guests might also be regulated, but for the visitors wanting to get married in the islands, the wide array of beaches can satisfy the most discrimate of taste. Allow yourself enough time to check out potential beach location.

Hawaiian Waikiki Wedding's (HWW) most popular beach location is Diamond Head Leahi Park. Located at the foot of Diamond Head crater, this spot is perfect for sunset weddings and photography. Park permit is free. Location pictures abound on the Web.

Other popular locations within a twenty minutes drive from Waikiki are the Ala Moana Beach Park, Magic Island, Kakaáko Waterfront Park, and Waialae Beach Park. All these locations have their own unique features and drawbacks.

Ala Moana Beach Park has the blue water background with Diamond Head silhouette in the distance. Its mile long, white sandy beach can be crowded. An early morning or sunset wedding will be the best time. Waialae Beach Park is ideal for a 'barefoot in the sand' wedding. Its concave shape juts out into the ocean. It is like getting married in a separate little island. Couples have to walk along the beach to get to the 'island.'

The key issue is time; couples should allow enough time to visit various wedding locations. If time is an issue, viewing location pictures on the Web is the second best alternative.

Helpful Wedding Reception Tips and Advice

Just because Hawaii is known for its laid back pace, that does not mean lack of organization. Having a reception timeline is a must.

Below is Nicola Ray's article 'Everything You Need To Know About Your Wedding Reception Timeline.' Forward to your Groom and Bride-To-Be.

Your wedding reception timeline needs to be well thought out, simply because after a few drinks everyone will start to relax and time will run away! And you certainly don’t want to be cutting the cake at midnight! Below is an outline of my reception timeline which you can use as a guide. It’s important to plan the reception timeline well and make sure the wedding party are clear what their roles are, where they need to be when and what they need to do.

As bride and groom, it’s your job to relax and enjoy the day; while your ushers and bridesmaids make sure your timelines are adhered to. You’ll also need to let your suppliers know the timeline, so they too know where to be when.

The timeline very much depends on when you have your ceremony, mainly because everything flows on after this. The most important thing being the food, this is simply because food needs to be served hot if cooked and cold if a buffet – so the caterers will need to know when this should be served.

You should also consider the number of guests you have. More guests means the process will be slower as you’ll need to get them from one place to another. For example, getting the guests seated for the meal or in the right place for the cutting of the cake. An invaluable resource is to have a toastmaster to direct people. For my wedding, my brother did the honours and he was brilliant, slick and smooth (in a good way!). My photographer commented on how easy it was to their job as he was calling people at the right time. I suppose that’s what happens when you spend your life shouting at people all day (he’s an officer in the army). Don’t forget that people don’t mind standing around chatting a while, but we all like to sit down after about 30 minutes standing. This is especially true for Great Aunt Maud, who is a little wobbly on her legs. So make sure you always have a seated area.

If there’s going to be a long wait between arriving at the venue and dinner, then some nibbles will help guest’s hunger and also their tipsiness. Some canapés will be welcomed while waiting for the bride and groom to arrive.

My wedding reception timeline

2.30pm – Ceremony at the church.

3.15pm – Ceremony ends, photos at the church.

3.45pm – Ushers guide guests to the house for the reception. Bride and Groom go for photos alone (close to church).

4.00pm – Guests arrive at house and are served champagne or soft drinks.

4.15pm – Bride and Groom arrive at house for photos with family and guests.

4.45pm – Bride and Groom mill around with guests (rather than a formal receiving line). 5.45pm – Sit down for dinner. Once everyone is seated, Father of the Bride welcomes everyone. 6.00pm – Dinner is served. The wedding table serve themselves, followed by the rest of the tables.

6.45pm – Main course dishes are cleared away. The dessert and cheese board are laid out. Wedding table serve themselves. The rest of the tables follow.

7.15pm – All unwanted dishes and cutlery are cleared away.

7.30pm – All glasses are filled for the toast.

7.45pm - The wedding speeches start. Father of the Bride starts, then the Groom to thank everyone, then the Best Man.

8.30pm – Cutting of the cake. The bottom layer served as nibbles throughout the night.

9.00pm – First dance

9.15pm – Party begins

You can also choose to serve more food later in the evening, a cheese board, cold buffet, burgers or kebabs (you name it)! One thing for the bride to do is to throw her bouquet. Hawaiian Style: Same gender ceremony

Our same gender wedding ceremony is over and if you want to know how we did, I'd have to say we did it with flying colors! Granted we were all a bit apprehensive, after all this was our debut, but it ended up such a beautiful ceremony, we wondered afterwards why we thought it would be any different. As Sibylle simply and eloquently put it, "The important thing is that they love each other." Even their vows were special. After removing the 'wife' and 'husband' connotations, the simple vow to pledge friendship and support for each other was heart warming indeed. We are keenly looking forward for our next ceremony.

Hawaiian Waikiki Wedding (HWW) freebies!

Hawaii Marriage or Civil Union?

February is going to be a historical month for HWW; we're going to have our first same-sex vow renewal ceremony. Same-sex marriages is not legal in the islands, but our lawmakers are finally ready to address the issue. The Honolulu Advertiser headline this morning "Civil union bills take legislative stage" is sure to attract some heated debate; both from legislators and the public.

HWW's stance on same-sex marriage is neutral. For us, the important issue is one of fairness. Do we have the right to choose whom we want to share our lives with or not? When confronted with such a question, the majority will agree that we do have the right to choose. However, when it comes down to the core, we find that 'freedom' vastly restricted and its foundation based on biased religious and other preconceived ideas. In the end, there is no such thing as freedom to choose. Welcome!

Time flies when one is having fun, or when one can't possibly do everything that needs doing within the normal 24 hours day. Only ten more days left, and it will be February. Before you know it, we'll be saying it will be Xmas or another new year. However, there's no reason to panic, but rather a good reason to plan ahead.
